|  | | 2017 Western States HorsExpoA day of everything equine! Always spent with good friends who share my love of horses. This year, special albums (in addition to the breeds) include the Sacramento Sheriff's and Poker Rodeo.
The Sacramento Sheriff's Department has a wild horse program now where they select inmates to gentle and train some of the Mustangs that the BLM rounds up. Each year they adopt some out at the HorsExpo. For more information you can go to www.friendsofR3C.com
Poker Rodeo was fun to see. It's a twist on cutting where each cow has a "card" on it's back representing a playing card from 8 to A for all 4 suits. The teams are made of 2 riders and they have up to 2 minutes (event can set it at 50/75/90/120 seconds) to go and cut 5 cows from the herd to form a poker hand. Too many cows will result in no score. A "Hole Card" is announced and that's the card that the team must cut from the herd first. If a wrong card is cut then no score as well.
